JOHN WARE AND HIS “WASHINGTON STATE REDS AT SEAR”,
Sear

Dear Members,

For our 2nd event in May, the Society is pleased to present an evening with John Ware and his “Washington State Reds at Sear”, featuring wines from Quilceda Creek Estate - the “Washington State's premier Cabernet Sauvignon producer” (as named by Robert Parker Jr.) due to an unbroken string of highly-rated vintages being produced by the Estate over the years.

Founded in 1979, Quilceda Creek is dedicated exclusively to the production of world-class Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon.  Since 1997, Quilceda Creek became a partner in Champoux Vineyard, LLC with a handful of other Washington wineries, which was commemorated by their first single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon: 1997 Quilceda Creek Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This was the first, and only, single-vineyard wine produced by Quilceda Creek from Champoux Vineyard.

In 2001, the Golitzin Family partnered with Jim Holmes of Ciel du Cheval in the Red Mountain AVA to develop the Galitzine Vineyard. This 17-acre vineyard is planted with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.  In 2006, Paul Golitzin and brother-in-law John Ware acquired a 4.5-acre vineyard located next to Champoux Vineyard. Renaming the vineyard Palengat in recognition of the French side of the family, this vineyard produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, and is marketed under the label Palengat Proprietary Red Wine, Horse Heaven Hills. Quilceda Creek’s wines were featured at Wine Spectator’s New York Wine experience and the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley was #2 for Wine Spectator's Top 10 Wines in the World for 2015.

Gracing the event to share with us his personal wine making experience and insights into the Quilceda Creek’s wine making philosophy is John Ware, Vice President & General Manager of the estate.  John's first harvest was in 1986 while he was still attending the University of Washington. He took a full-time position at the winery in June 2000 after some years in the high-tech sector, following the footsteps of his father-in-law Alex Golitzin.  Over the years, John moved into the capacity as Vice President and General Manager overseeing the financial efforts of the winery and its vineyard holdings. With his brother-in-law, John and his wife Lisa, are part owners of the Galitzine and Palengat Vineyards.

Over the last 13 vintages, Wine Advocate has rated Quicelda Creek’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon an average of 98.9 pts.  Wine Spectator has named Quicelda Creek to its prestigious annual “Top Ten Wines in the World” list three times in the last decade with its 2003, 2010 and 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley respectively.

Our thanks to Water & Wine who have supplied us with a thorough sampling of the portfolio, which will be matched with the gastronomic creations of executive chef Claudio Sandri, who serves modern American cuisine with an emphasis on high quality and flavorsome steaks.

To this end, two 400kg PIRA charcoal ovens have been imported from Spain to achieve the perfect ‘sear’ on the outside and a gorgeous shade of pink on the inside, sealing in the tantalising juices of each steak.  Handsomely furnished with beautiful leather couches, dark wooden paneling and metal interiors, the striking bull’s head motifs lining the walls, which are juxtaposed against the impressive floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of the Marina Bay.
Please sign up early for this special evening, as usual Members will have priority for booking places in the first 48 hours, as there is capacity for approximately 40pax for this.

Accolades.  In 2013 makes the two highest scoring Cabernet Sauvignon wines of the 2013 vintage in Wine Advocate Washington Report.
Wine Advocate , Jun #225 - Quilceda Creek's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley and the 2013 Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain took top honors in Washington.
Jeb Dunnuck writes about the #1 wine in Washington, "I think the wine of the vintage, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley is flat out sensational, and flirts with perfection. Its inky ruby/purple color is followed by incredible notes of cassis, black currants, smoked herbs, licorice and graphite. These give way to a full-bodied, utterly seamless Cabernet that has full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannin and a killer finish. While it possesses the elegance and purity of the vintage, it has a stacked mid-palate, and deserves 4-5 years of cellaring. It will have two decades or more of overall longevity." Score: 99 points
